Spring Grooming Guide for NYC Men:
Transitioning Your Look for Warmer Weather

By City Barbers, Upper East Side NYC April 18, 2026 6 min read

Spring in New York City is a reset button. The heavy coats come off, sidewalks fill up, and suddenly the thick winter haircut you've been hiding under a beanie for four months is out in public again. If your hair, beard, and skin haven't kept pace with the weather, now is the time to catch up.

At City Barbers on the Upper East Side, we see the same pattern every April: clients come in asking for something lighter, sharper, and easier to maintain as humidity creeps back into the forecast. Here's how we help them transition their grooming routine for spring in NYC — and how you can do the same.

1. Lighten the Weight on Top

Winter cuts tend to carry more length on top. It's practical — longer hair traps warmth, holds under a hat, and survives dry indoor heat without going flat. But once temperatures climb into the 60s and the subway platforms turn muggy, that extra length starts to feel heavy and look overgrown.

Ask your barber to take some bulk off the top and re-establish shape. You don't need to go dramatically shorter — even removing half an inch and re-texturing can make a cut feel seasonally appropriate. If you've been running a longer side part or pomp all winter, consider a lighter textured crop or a cleaner taper for spring.

2. Tighten the Sides and Neckline

Spring in NYC means more collared shirts, more outdoor events, and more close-up conversations. Sharper sides and a crisp neckline raise the perceived quality of any cut. If you've been letting your sides grow out over winter for warmth, book an appointment to get them back in line.

A skin fade or low taper with a clean neckline reads immediately in photos and in person — it's the kind of subtle upgrade people notice without being able to say exactly what changed. A shape up ($20) between full cuts will hold this look through the season.

3. Reshape the Beard (Don't Just Trim It)

If you grew a winter beard, resist the urge to shave it off in a panic the first warm weekend. Instead, have it properly reshaped. Spring beards work best shorter, more defined, and with the cheek and neckline clearly established.

Our barbers typically recommend dropping winter beard length by 25–40% for spring. The result looks intentional rather than neglected. For men who prefer clean faces by May, a gradual step-down — full beard, to stubble, to clean — over three to four weeks is far more flattering than going straight to a razor.

4. Switch Your Styling Product

Heavy pomades and oil-based products that performed well in dry winter air become a liability in spring humidity. They weigh hair down, attract sweat, and can leave your scalp feeling greasy by early afternoon.

Trade thick pomades for a matte clay, a light cream, or a sea salt spray. These give hold and texture without the heaviness and are far more forgiving when spring rain hits. Our guide to pomade, wax, and clay walks through the differences.

5. Rebuild Your Skincare

Winter in New York dries out skin — central heat, cold wind, and low humidity all strip moisture. By April, most men are dealing with a dull complexion, some lingering flakiness, and patches of dry skin around the jawline. Now is the time to reset.

Scale back heavy winter moisturizers in favor of something lighter. Start using a gentle exfoliant once or twice a week to clear away dead skin built up over the winter. If you haven't been using SPF daily, start now — UV exposure in NYC increases sharply in April and your face catches it even when you're just walking between avenues.

6. Book a Hot Towel Shave

A professional hot towel shave is one of the best ways to mark the seasonal transition. It clears away winter's neglect, leaves your skin noticeably smoother, and gives you a fresh starting point for spring grooming. For many of our clients, it's become a yearly ritual.

7. Set a Spring Haircut Schedule

Hair grows faster in warmer months — a well-documented pattern driven partly by increased blood flow and vitamin D exposure. If you stretched winter cuts to five or six weeks, tighten the schedule now. Most men look their sharpest on a three to four week rotation from April through September.

At City Barbers, many of our regulars alternate a full haircut with a shape up in between, keeping their look consistent through the season without overcommitting their calendar.
